Unity Technologies’ Unity for Humanity Grant Brings Terminal 3 to Tribeca Film Festival

$25,000 grant helps bring to market Terminal 3: an augmented reality documentary exploring Muslim identities in the U.S. through the lens of airport interrogation

SAN FRANCISCO, April 19, 2018 -- Unity Technologies (https://unity3d.com/), creator of the world’s most widely used real-time 3D development platform, today announced the launch of the first annual Unity for Humanity grant: a $25,000 grant designed to support creators who are developing Unity projects that feature themes of social awareness, healthcare, science, education, humanity and the environment. The grant is inspired by projects dealing with social issues like Terminal 3, an interactive, augmented-reality documentary by Asad J. Malik, exploring contemporary Muslim identities in the U.S. through the lens of an airport interrogation. which Unity partnered with earlier this year to support its premiere at Tribeca.

Created by Asad J. Malik, an independent XR creator who runs 1RIC, Terminal 3 takes viewers into an interrogation room to determine the fate of a hologram passenger before them, exploring perceived Muslim identity in the current climate. Terminal 3 is produced by RYOT and Kaleidoscope, and is experienced through a Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality headset, for which Unity owns 90% market share. More than 60% of all AR/VR content is made with Unity. The Terminal 3 world premiere will be at Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th.

"Unity, is not a game engine anymore, it’s a tool that will democratize the creation of new realms of reality and expression,” said Asad J. Malik, creator of Terminal 3. “We’re moving towards a world where individuals can create worlds for others to experience. Defining the reality of the future is a huge responsibility but also an unprecedented opportunity for change. It’s important that tools like Unity make a special effort to give the stage to underrepresented narratives, which is why it’s an honor that Terminal 3 is recognized with this thoughtful new grant. I’m very proud to be the first recipient and am excited for all the indie creators who will receive these funds in the future to push their expression forward.”

The grant is a part of Unity’s Made with Unity program, a group dedicated to discovering and showcasing Unity projects from a vast and diverse community of creators.

“As the leading interactive development platform, it is important that we highlight meaningful projects from a diverse range of creators and across many industries,” said Isabelle Riva, Head of Made With Unity. “With the Unity for Humanity grant, we can celebrate meaningful projects and showcase the world-changing good that can be accomplished when creators have access to the right tools.”

The 2019 Unity for Humanity call for submissions will open on October 1, 2018, and the recipient will be announced in January 2019. Submissions will be judged by the Made with Unity team based on the story, impact, art direction and creative use of technology. Unity encourages creators from all backgrounds and skill levels to apply.
